Introduction
The following report of field investigations is a summary based primarily on
verbal sources and limited written documentation. These include interviews with
Keith V. Holland, Lee B. Manley, conversations with many of the Saint Johns
Archaeological Expedition volunteers, and the notes and drawings made over the
years during site work. The soon to be published manuscript The Maple Leaf: An
Extraordinary American Civil War Shipwreck also provided very valuable
information. All work discussed in this report was conducted completely under
the auspices of Saint Johns Archaeological Expeditions, Inc. Starting January 1,
1992, East Carolina University entered into a three year Memorandum of Agreement
with Saint Johns Archaeological Expeditions, Inc. to conduct a professional
archaeological investigation of the site. This report represents one aspect of
that agreement and was produced with information compiled by the Program in
Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology for the purpose of documenting site
activities that occurred prior to 1992.
