LEVEL 1
Level 1 begins under the main deck and extends two feet in depth (Figure 22).
Artifact concentration is minimal and results from material floating to the top
of the hold. This includes a barrel (R 85), a field desk (R70) and tent poles in
the south wall of the trench.
RECOVERY 70
Type: field desk
Location: top northwest corner of the desk is 7.13 feet south/5.48 feet east/1.5
feet deep. It extends vertically from 1.5 feet to 3.4 feet below datum.
Diagnostic Artifacts: general service coat button, tin buttons, suspender clip
fastener and elastic, straight edges, forage cap brim, toothbrush, tin can,
sponge fragment, sealing wax, three-piece mold bottle, shaving brush, sash,
brass container with pen nibs, textile (possible jacket), leatherbound book,
French grammar book, bound document, rubber blanket, field desk.
Discussion: the desk was found up side down with the door unhinged and open to
the south. It measures 25 3/4 inches wide, 22 1/2 inches high, and 13 5/8 inches
deep. Artifacts were found inside the desk and lying on top of the door. The
artifacts represent both personal items and those of a clerk. Two field desks
were found during the 1988/89 excavation. One of them has been analyzed in
detail (Turner 1994).
RECOVERY 71 and 82
Type: tent poles
Location: the northwest corner of this amorphous cluster begin roughly 11.2 feet
south/1.0 feet east. It reaches east and south into the excavation walls and
extends vertically through all levels.
Diagnostic Artifacts: rectangular ridgepoles, octagonal up-right poles,
octagonal inkwell, 1 general service coat button, axe, tent rope tighteners,
canteen cork and finial, brass candle holder, musket nipple, musket tool, rubber
blanket.
Discussion: Recovery 71 and 82 are tent poles that rest on the centerline of the
ship and are oriented bow to stern (east/west). The group is loosely stacked and
extends through all levels; from the underside of the main deck down to the
lower deck. The two recovery numbers reflect two different dates of activity on
the same group of tent poles. Recovery 71 are poles from the upper 3 feet. A
sample of poles were recovered for conservation and analysis. Recovery 82
includes the poles located under Recovery 71. Loose unassociated artifacts are
intermixed throughout the poles.
RECOVERY 82
See Recovery 71, Level 1.
RECOVERY 85
Type: barrel/boot
Location: the center of the barrel top is 7.0 feet south/11.5 feet east/1.0 feet
deep. It extends vertically from 1.0 feet to 3.42 feet below datum.
Diagnostic Artifacts: barrel, Wellington style boot.
Discussion: the barrel rested upright, held in place by the silt matrix. It
measures 29 inches tall, approximately 18 inches in diameter and was banded with
3 or more wooden hoops. The heads have come off each end and nothing was found
inside. The boot floated to the top of the hold and came to rest just above the
barrel. It is not associated with the barrel except by its close proximity. This
boot makes a pair with Recovery 76, found on the lower deck.
